Vipassana, meditation was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal rememdy for universal ills, an Art of Living.
In the Blue Mountains outside Sydney there is a Vipassana Meditation Centre called Dhamma Bhumi. That’s where I’m heading today — ten days of meditation, no talk and simple food.

I think meditation is excellent for mental health and general well being, but I have an issue with people just going off to retreats without any regard for the issues and workload they leave behind. I mean, while they’re off enjoying the simple life in a remote and peaceful place, others are having to look after real life matters, like shopping, working, pets, house, cars, family, etc. Is it just me or are retreats a bit of a cop-out for those who can’t handle normal life, a pretense at effort when they’re really having a holiday?? I mean, let’s get honest here. What’s involved in meditation? Sitting on your bum all day, eyes closed, thoughts floating around without purpose or direction – it’s not too taxing, is it?
Ommmm! Sorry Bjoerg, too busy meditating to answer your many questions.
